Mario Sergio was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 1995 and was re-elected in 1999, 2003 and 2007. He has served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Consumer and Business Services, served as Deputy Whip and Critic for Small Business and Seniors' Issues.

In government since 2003, he has been serving as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister Responsible for Municipal Affairs and Housing.

He is currently serving as a member of the Legislative Committee, Private Members' Bills Committee and the Justice, Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs Committee.

Sergio's public life spans more than 30 years. He was first elected in1978 on the City of North York Council where he served for 18 years. From 1985 to 1988, he was a member of Metro Toronto Council as well and served on various Boards and Commissions including: Planning Board; Transportation; Public Works; Metro Region Conservation Authority; Metro Toronto Housing; Canadian National Exhibition and others.

Before entering politics at age 21, Sergio started his own business as broker in insurance and real estate.

Sergio's community involvement spans more than 35 years including being a member and Director of The Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association, founding member of C.O.S.T.I., (Centro Organizzativo Scuole Tecniche Italiane), member of Confederazione Calabro Canadese, and member of several associations and clubs. He has been honoured as Cavaliere of the Italian Republic, he is also a member of the Order of St. John's Chevalier of Malta, member of the Knights of Columbus and Consultore for the Region of Calabria in Canada.

Sergio was born in Rende, Cosenza, where he received his education at the Istituto Tecnico Industriale. He is married to Rose and have two children and four grandchildren.
