Cleveland is located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, the most populous county in the state. According to the 2000 Census, Cleveland is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Elyria Combined Statistical Area, which is the 14th largest in the country with a population of over 2.9 million residents. Cleveland is centrally and ideally located along the southern shore of Lake Erie. Cleveland has consistently been found to be one of the most livable cities in the United States.
Cleveland was founded in 1796 near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, and became a manufacturing and transportation center. Cleveland remains a manufacturing center, but its economy has diversified into the service economy, including financial services, insurance and healthcare. Cleveland is also noted for its association with rock music and serves as the home for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Cleveland is the corporate headquarters for many large corporations such as National City Corporation, Eaton Corporation, Forest City Enterprises, The Sherwin-Williams Company and KeyCorp. Moreover, Cleveland is an emerging area for biotechnology and fuel cell research, led by Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals of Cleveland.
Italians have a long and vibrant history in Cleveland. As of the 2000 Census, over 4.6% of Clevelanders claimed to be of Italian heritage. Ohio itself has the eighth most Italians in the United States.
